Caleta de Famara

Situated on the north western coast, the small fishing village of Caleta de Famara has achieved worldwide recognition as a surfer's heaven. These beaches are more geared towards water sports like surfing, the beaches at Famara certainly also make for a great walk, it has been suggested that some of scenery is the most spectacular the island has to offer.

With the beach of San Juan playing host to international surf contests and the geographic position creating ideal conditions, it is appealing for the surfing crowd.

Famara is essentially split into two parts, the original fishing village known as Caleta and the relatively new Bungalows, which is situated under the cliffs.

Famara is a more laid back place with a more traditional air than more recent developments on the rest of the island. The streets are covered in sand and it has a small picturesque harbour, which is nowadays mainly used by locals to launch their private leisure boats, as opposed to the small commercial fishing vessels which were the centre of the economy of Famara in days gone by.

The urbanisation of Famara is largely a development of Bungalows most of which are of an interesting semi-circular shape.

Famara enjoys one of the longest stretched beaches on the island of Lanzarote, curving round under the cliffs. The strong currents mean that it is not advisable to swim in the sea at Famara, most people you find in the water are experienced surfers. These currents mean that the beach is sandy in summer and rocky in the winter which might be considered a bit unusual. The strong winds also mean that other beaches on the island may be more suited to sun worshiper but this is precisely why lovers of sports like kite surfing, windsurfing and surfing flock to this beach, and there are a variety of schools in which you can learn these exhilarating sports if you are a beginner.

The restaurants in Famara would mostly be described as beach restaurants; therefore you have just caught seafood available, while you enjoy the stunning views over the Atlantic. Be aware there are no banks around, so make sure you have enough cash on you before you visit the area.

Famara might not be for everyone, but if you would rather invigorate your senses with some fantastic scenery and a chilled out atmosphere than this could be the place for you.
