The dry climate in Lanzarote does not naturally lend itself to the creation of green golf-courses.
However, the de-salination plants produce abundant water straight from the Atlantic. This means that is now possible to produce the rich growth of grass needed for a top-class course. Therefore, Lanzarote became the perfect place to play golf all year around, when it is not possible elsewhere.
Lanzarote Golf Resort Puerto del Carmen
The Lanzarote Golf Resort is now open just outside Puerto del Carmen. Its location on the hills overlooking Puerto del Carmen gives it incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and the course itself is well-planned with numerous mature palm trees and other indigenous plants. The golf course was designed by the well-known American golf course designer, Ron Kirby, and is an 18 hole, 72 par course which is 6,133 metres long.
To minimise the environmental impact, the course has been laid out to reduce its effects on the surrounding countryside and incorporate an irrigation system that uses recycled water.
The friendly bi-lingual staff at the Golf Resort will be happy to lend a hand to anyone who wants to play a round of golf, from the absolute beginner to advanced golfers who want to improve their game.
Buggies, electronic trolleys and clubs are all available to hire, while an experienced instructor is also on hand for those who wish to take lessons, including lessons for children.
To find the Golf Resort, you shall drive the "Carretera Puerto del Carmen" towards Tias and exit on Avenida Juan Carlos 1, Puerto del Carmen.
Costa Teguise Golf Course
The oldest course on the island, Costa Teguise Golf has been open since 1978 and it provides a splendid location at the base of a dormant volcano.
It is only a 20 minute drive from the modern Arrecife International Airport and only 10 minutes from the island's capital Arrecife.
Situated on the edge of the resort of Costa Teguise, this course has easy access to hotels and restaurants as well as the beach, ocean and local cultural attractions for when you want a change of pace.
While the mass of green is not at all what you expect from Lanzarote's more arid landscape, it fits in unexpectedly well, and from almost every hole either the sea or a volcano can be seen.
It was built to fit in the surroundings of local plants and trees, such as the beautiful Canary Island Date palm, which lends this all year round, course a tropical air.
It is a 72 par course, the course benefits from a brilliant clubhouse with a Pro-shop, Restaurant and Coffee Bar. Equipment is available for hire from half and full sets of clubs through to Golf Buggies so there is no need to lug your clubs all the way to Lanzarote. The course has a resident pro and offers both private and group lessons.
